Frugal vs Cheap

The dictionary defines the word Frugal as economy in use of resources and the word Cheap as low in price. It seems that the two words are used synonymously and both have a negative connotation. To me a frugal person is one who spends less than he earns and doesn’t spend money unnecessarily or frivolously.

When the frugal person does buy something, he finds the best value whether it be by waiting for it to go on sale or using a coupon. On the other hand, a cheap person only looks at the price and will buy the item with the lowest price without regard to the quality.

A cheap person is often penny wise and pound foolish, and refuse to buy things that are necessary. Also, a cheap person will take advantage of others to save a buck.

A frugal person will cook at home rather than eat out. If he does go out to eat, he will find a nice restaurant that is affordable and may use a coupon. A cheap person will give the waiter a small tip to save money.

A frugal person will research to see what television has the best features and provides the best value, whereas a cheap person will pick the cheapest television…bad reviews be damned!

A frugal person is generous and charitable with his money when it is worthwhile, but it pains a cheap person to part with his money.

I went to a conference for work and lunch was provided. There was a lady who would always be first to get out the door to get food, and she would fill up two plates, bring it back to her table. Then, she would put the food in containers and ziplock bags. When dessert was put out in the serving area, she was ahead of me in line and took the last Danish. Argh…it wouldn’t bother me if it wasn’t for the fact that the Danish was going into her ziplock bag and then into her huge purse.

I am proud to call myself a frugal person. I think that slowly, but surely, the term will be viewed in a positive light. I am frugal. I like things that provide value and are practical. I like to be efficient. I am frugal.

Can you share more examples between being cheap and being frugal? And while you’re at it, I love crazy stories about how cheap people can be, so please share those as well!

These are great comparisons. I have to admit I sometimes fall into the cheap category when I was trying to achieve frugal. I will be trying harder for “frugal!”

Thanks Susan. It’s okay, I’ve fallen into the cheap category at times too. Sometimes it’s a gray area! And sometimes I was being pennywise but pound foolish.
