Friday Roundup

For those of you who celebrate the Lunar New Year. Happy Lunar New Year! For those who are football fans, I’m sure you’re looking forward to Super Bowl Sunday. I’m a New York Giants fan so I don’t really have a rooting interest in this game. I like Peyton Manning and it would be nice for him to get another ring, as many criticize him for “only” winning one. However, I also like Seattle, since I have family there and my father lived there for a while. Russell Wilson seems like a cool guy, and the Seahawks did kind of get robbed by officials against the Steelers back in Super Bowl XL. If you don’t have a television, you can still watch it free online. If you’re not watching, Kim from Eyes on the Dollar has a list of other things you can do instead.

If I get the chance, I might try to check out the Super Bowl festivities in the city. Any other New Yorkers check it out? How was it? Who are you rooting for?

Cool Stuff Online

A while back, I read a Yahoo article about a family “living off the grid” in the middle of a desert. They built thier own home and live off the land. They use natural resources like the sun and wind power, they have a farm, and oh…they also have a blog. It’s a pretty interesting story.

And in other news, even the Royal Family needs to budget and live within their means.

From the Blogosphere

It is unfortunate that it takes a sad event such as a health scare or a death of a loved one to reflect on what is truly important in life. Check out this thought provoking article from Ryan who blogs at Impersonal Finance entitled What Will Be Your Legacy?. Here is an excerpt:

“People are whatโ€™s important. Bank accounts wonโ€™t remember you- people will. So, if your goal is to obtain financial independence (like me), take a minute to think about what youโ€™re going to do with it. How are you going to leave this world a better place than you found it?”

Loved that part!

One way to leave a lasting legacy is through your children and of course, family is the most important at the end of the day. I’d hope that I can impart my financial wisdom on them, and I love reading Shannon’s blog, The Heavy Purse who is a great resource if you want to learn to raise financially confident children.

I’ve been contemplating my anonymity on my blog, and would feel a little awkward if people I knew read my posts. I try not impart my financial opinions on others, though it is sometimes very hard to refrain from doing so. I will, however, give my thoughts if asked, or if it involves some technical issues such as helping someone understand tax benefits of the 401k, IRA or other related issues. That’s why I like blogging, because I get to speak my mind. Anna from Are Ya Gonna Eat That? posted Discussing Personal Finance IRL recently…IRL means “in real life, and yes I had to google that! It’s an interesting discussion as to having personal finance discussions with people outside of the blogosphere. Also check out the comments to see what others do.

Mr. 1500 who blogs at 1500 Days to Freedom did discuss personal finances IRL, with his sister and it was quite interesting. Read his post Thursday Rant: Escalade Edition. Definitely check out his flowchart!

Finally, K.K who blogs at Student Debt Survivor, listed 15 tips just in case of a natural disaster. I mean you just never know sometimes. Who knew a hurricane would hit the NYC metro area? Who knew 3 inches of snow would paralyze the city of Atlanta and make it look like a scene out of The Walking Dead?

Thank you to Tonya from Budget and the Beach and Ryan from Impersonal Finance for mentioning my articles.

I actually just went over to check out the Times Square festivities. I participated in zero events and waited in zero lines, but it was really nice to just watch how much fun people were having, playing in NYC together!

That said – definitely rooting for Peyton in this one. I know you are a Giants fan, but I think Peyton deserves at least as many Super Bowl victories as his brother.

Well I think Peyton is a better QB, but Eli is pretty clutch. He probably also played for teams with better defenses too. Yea, I wouldn’t wait in those lines too, even though the weather is supposed to warm up a bit.

I’ll give them their due for beating the Cardinals in their next appearance in the Super Bowl. That was a good game!

No…I’m a Giants fan! We had this conversation over at your blog =) Fellow New Yorker! Actually my mention of that game is a bit of a slight against the Steelers…nothing against them, but I didn’t like that game because of the horrible calls by the refs. Not saying the Seahawks would have won, but at least it should have been fair. I wasn’t rooting for either team, but ended up rooting for the Seahawks after those bad calls.

Yea I wanted to check it out since the big game probably won’t come back to NYC any time soon. I couldn’t make it out there unfortunately…too much going on and I was feeling a bit under the weather. Heard it was crazy crowded though. But nice weather on Saturday. The weather held out until…today which is nasty!

Thanks for the mention and kind words! I appreciate them! I have not read Ryan’s post yet but definitely have it on my list now. I often think about the legacy I want to leave behind. My father left behind a powerful legacy and he had a huge impact on my life and what I do. And hopefully how I serve others as he did. I want to make a difference too. Have a great weekend!

No problem. The compliments are well deserved. I feel more confident in knowing there are methods to raising financially confident and not self-entitled children reading your stuff. Will definitely be implementing many of your ideas.

Happy Lunar New Year to you, too, Andrew! Thanks for the mention, as well – I agree the comments were great, and really helped me with some current situations (i.e., I thought for sure PF people would talk more about it to be less taboo, but that doesn’t seem to be the case, so it was enlightening to hear others’ views!). And I’m rooting for the Seahawks this Sunday – otherwise, I don’t have a ride back home, B says. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Your Seahawks destroyed the Broncos! Hope you had a great weekend!

Yea, I’m just a little paranoid. Plus, I’m always scared that if a friend or family member reads about it they might get upset. I have mentioned some of the spending habits of people I know, so I’d feel awkward if they read that.

I think revealing my blog to my friends IRL ๐Ÿ™‚ was a very scary step for me, but I’m so glad I did it. I really found it was a lot less scary than imagined and it’s funny how many friends have told me they enjoy it. I always approach everything I write as if no one reads it, and as if everyone reads it. Keeps me in line. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yea I think most people I know would enjoy it, but I’ve mentioned some people and their spendthrift ways so I wouldn’t want them to read it. They’ll probably take it in a bad way. So did you get to watch the Super Bowl. Well if you didn’t, you didn’t miss much. The game was pretty dull.

Andrew, seriously, many thanks for including me! I really appreciate it. And that game was a total dud. I saw that article about the Royal family and thought the same thing…. I also thought that if they had worked for their money instead of being born into it, they probably would spend it more wisely. Have a great week friend!

No problem. That’s very true…I often find those that are born into money never learn to spend wisely.
